There is a general rule in photography to never shoot in full sun. When you are an on location photographer without a studio, that only leaves a few hours each day to shoot. Often clients have schedules that don’t allow for the golden hour (1-2 hours before sunset) session. One thing you can do is pray for clouds or overcast. Another option is to find shade. But what if your subject really wants to sit on the bench right near the river, out in the open sun and it is 12 o’clock noon?
Get a young college student who is eager to learn photography and have her hold a diffuser. Thanks Tiffany for your assistance!
This first pair of images was shot with almost no natural shade. It was high noon without a cloud in the sky!

I thought this photo was on my blog in an earlier post, but I was wrong. I want to post this to show an example of how to properly use patterns when selecting attire for a photo shoot. Stripes and polka dots are always popular for toddlers, but they can be distracting in photos. It’s best to dress your tot in a solid top and use a pattern for the bottoms. This photo is so awesome that it is on my portrait business card (I have a separate one for weddings).

A little over a year ago I made friends with some high school juniors who became my reps for 2009 senior sessions. Tiffany was one of them. She also did a “trash the dress” session as well as her regular senior session later on. While we were getting to know each other, she told me about her interest in photography. As soon as I told her we were having another baby, she couldn’t wait to shoot some maternity shots for me. I gave her a crash course in camera basics and she ran with it. I took her raw photos and enhanced them as I do my own. Here are my favorites:

I couldn’t be more happy about my last senior session. Rachel definitely wins the prize for “Amazing Eyes.” The blue dress looked so good, we decided not to change outfits. Here are some of my favorites:
